Who We Are

Lutherans for Love is a ministry of LGBTQIA+ people and allies from congregations in the San Diego region that welcome all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Our mission is to publicly demonstrate God’s radical love by celebrating and supporting the lives of LGBTQIA+ people in our churches, our communities, and beyond. This is a year-round commitment—while Pride is a joyful and visible moment, our welcome does not begin or end there.

  • We show up at Pride to celebrate.
  • We show up in our congregations to advocate. We celebrate FULL participation at the table with the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • We support Lutheran congregations in this ministry.

We are rooted in Christ’s reconciling message. We commit to walking alongside a community that has historically been hurt by the Church, and to letting our community know that we are here, and you are welcome.

Lutherans for Love is a collective of allies from area ELCA (*Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) churches who stand for the power of radically inclusive love. Jesus taught that the greatest commandment in all the law is to love your neighbor. Full stop. San Diego Lutherans for Love believes God’s love is not ours to dole out but to experience freely with everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, age, sexual orientation, marital status, social or economic state, physical or mental challenge, and whether you are confident or questioning in your faith.

*Evangelical has become a misnomer for our church. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America was founded on the word evangelical, derived from the Greek “euangelion”, meaning “the good news” or the “gospel.” Current U.S. political climates have altered how the word “evangelical” is understood. The ELCA is a church that seeks to share the unconditional love of God for all people.
